CHARITY
It is a great opportunity to choose a charity to support, and something that can be fun to plan with your child. But all charities are not created equal. Despite good intentions and deserving recipients, some charitable groups are more “efficient” than others. You should be aware of how much of your donation actually gets to those in need.
While most charities have to spend money to raise money, some allocate the majority of their income to this, which in the end mostly benefits for-profit organizations (like party planners, gourmet caterers, and banquet halls). And in some cases CEOs of non-profits can earn millions of dollars in annual salary.
According to the American Institute of Philanthropy, the best charities:
- should spend no more than $25 to raise $100 of public support
- should not hold excessive assets in reserve
- should willingly disclose their financial information
